325xi to 330xi with 330i donor

My beloved 325xi 5sp needs a motor. I found a cheap 330i auto donor car that needs a tranny. This seems like an easy and common swap 2wd-2wd from what I've read on here. Is this still a pretty straight forward deal going into a 4wd car? Are the oil pans different on an xi or anything?

Yes, the oil pan is different in order to clear the transfer case.
What year is the 330i?

The donor 330i is a 2001 and the host 325i is a 2003 facelift car. So I will need a 330xi oil pan. Anything else weird?

Since you have a 325xi, a few things are weird with the electronics.
In 09/02, BMW switched to a newer style valve cover and different type of coils.
In 03/03, BMW switched to MS45.1 for the ecu and no longer used the temp sensor in the intake manifold, moving it to the maf and making it 5 wire instead of 3. This, however, doesn't apply to xi's

You can transfer over your oil pan from the xi. What is the exact month and year for the production date of your car?

I think it was a February car. It says 02/03 on the door tag. The MAF has 3 wires.

Should be a direct swap then
Except the valve cover and coils but you van swap those over from the old engine to the new one

Any progress?? Seems pretty straight forward. I want to do the same.. I have a 02 wagon 325xi and want to put in a 330..preferably a ZHP.. but I hear the extra 10HP is not worth the extra cost for the engine. Thoughts on ZHP vs. 330?

I went from a 325 to 330 engine. It's a huge improvement. I would say since we had 325's in the beginning, the jump to a 330 is significant enough that zhp or not will feel great

Thanks! Ok, I blew a crap tone of black smoke out the rear last night on the highway getting around a truck.. first time I noticed this as I saw it in their headlight beams. Also, I changed the Oil filter housing gasket myself 2000k ago to stop a leak...but in that time I've topped up oil twice. So....Houston, we have a problem.

I have an M54b30 in my 325xit. (I also have a 6speed swap)

You have to swap the AWD m54b25 oil pan onto the M54B30. (dont forget to safetywire the oil pump nut while its apart)

You also need an airbox and a b30 MAF from the donor car.

While the motor is out you have to do a complete consumables overhaul - all new seals for the motor, new gaskets for intake and exhaust, new disa, new coolant hoses, new vaccum hoses, new seals for the oil filter housing, new this, new that.... if its made out of rubber it has to be replaced.

Also if you have some miles on your car, as you tear into it, you will unearth a lot of wear items that are due and that will inflate the bill further. Things you did not ever account for. (both steering shaft joints that get loose, clutch and flywheel, motor mounts, shifter bushings, guibo, front cv axles, transfer case mount bushing, steering rack gaiters, expansion tank etc...

While your car is apart now it is the time to do all of this.

It will add up $$$ and everywhere you have cut corners you will 100% regret it. A vaccum hose that takes 30 seconds to replace while the motor is out can take you over an hour when the motor is back into the car.

Trust me on this.

Last but not least, you will have to get the computer flashed with the b30 program. The b30 injectors flow a lot more and if you run the b25 program the car will want to run rich because it does not know that it has b30 injectors.

In my case I hugely underestimated the time and money this swap was going to cost.

M54 to M54 - simple and cheap... not!

I dont dare to add receipts but I bought a trans and motor for 1500$ but I know I bought well over 2k in consumables.

On the xi, things are more complex, there is no room to do anything, everything is in the way of everything.. (10lbs in 5lbs bag)

Come at this prepared. Do not think youll buy a donor car and two tubes of rtv and youll be set for this swap. You are setting yourself up for failure if you do.

good luck
