The diy E46 Vert

I have full build threads on other forums that show each job being done step by step but going to try and condense it down here and build it uo to bring you upto date

Down through the years my heart has always been with the VW scene with my mk2 gti 16v being that car I wish I never sold

There has been many other money pits down through the years a selection of which are below, just wish I had been better at keeping picture for all my previous

And my a few of my two wheeled toys

I Returned to Ireland in April 2018 after living abroad for 5 years, I needed to pick up a cheap car but certainly was not going to me a micra or firsta.

A mk4 gti 180bhp with full leather came up locally for the right money I had to take a look, the painted work on the car was poor but the maintenance and extras not to mention the price ment I couldn't leave it behind me.

I never really gelled with this car so when the offer of one of my bucket list cars came up I couldn't say no.

The car overall was in good condition but very standard ( not my style ) and room for improvement on the body work, looked like one of the previous owners used the corners as parking sensors even though these are standard fit on the car.

Over the next few post I will try and show how the car has changed bit by bit and the direction it is going but this is going to need to be broken down into smaller bites as photobucket is being slow as you know what

So Before I start going through the changes I made let me be clear that I am not a bmw purist so you may not agree with the mods.

I also decided early on that this was going to be a diy car as funds for hobbies are lot more limited these days.

First thing I needed to do was great rid of those horrible number plates for something which had a chance of passing our version of an MOT and replacing the front number plate holder. I also fitted a lip spoiler which was ordered colour matched.

The next issue for me was the color of the car, I never wanted a silver e46 but there definitely was not going to be the budget for a color change so I sent about adding some black details to break up the see of silver. In the previous post you can see the grills have be painted satin silver added to this were the mirrors and rear spoiler.

I'm jumping around and skipping a bit here as I've just discovered the app and it's way quicker than photo bucket which has been playing up for me lately.

While at a bmw breakers waiting around for my parts I spotted a set of m3 mirrors on the shelf but marked as being Ci, shout up to the guy to ask how much and to my surprise he said if its a pair €40, couldn't get my wallet out quick enough.

In these pics you will also see the csl style flippers or splitters or what ever you wanna call them have been fitted up along with a light smoke on the front light

Can't beat a bit of help from friends when trying to get ready to attend a show

Oops last pics gave a sneak peak to my new wheels, picked up in rough shape but wasn't worried as I am a big fan of dark wheels and had always planned on satin black bbs lm reps so out with the sand paper and rattle cans

Anyone who has zoomed in or read the first post will be aware 3 corners of the car had scrapes on the bumpers, I have never painted anything this large but in the spirt of a DIY build I'd said what's the worst that can happen, I mess it up and lose the cost of materials and have to pay a body shop anyway Click image for larger version

Now this weekends project, as much as I didn't like the mass of bland silver exterior what were bmw thinking fitting grey seat, grey carpets, grey door cards and grey roof cover... Way way too much grey

So few more changes over the last two weeks.

Finally got rid of that awful arch gap

And fitted my new KBS Autostyling sill extensions.

Absolutely trilled with how the car is coming together and getting very close to the picture I have in my head for how I want the car to look.

Love you buddy but if your claws get anywere near my leather or paint you will becoming a flying cat

Thought I was happy with how much lower it was, parking position in this pic isnt helping but has settled even more since and I freaking love it.

Will get more picture of settling when I can get 5 mins between double jobbing

Sun was splitting the stones on Sunday ( rare event in Ireland ) so cleaned the car and headed for a spin to our local cars and coffee event.

So When I upload pictures through photobucket it completley blurs them and the phone app doesnt seem to be work.

anyway i am giving up after this try.

So our club show is next weekend and with me double jobbing all week car had to be prepped on Saturday.. Car received a full wash, clay bar, machine polish and compound now I am no pro at this but love to have a go and learn new skills but very happy with way it came out, next time I will try and allow myself more time for each stage.

Also cleaned the interior, it makes me smile every time I see it now that see of grey is broken up.

So I have upgraded my photobucket account which is apparently is going to remove watermarks from my pictures and improve the quality, finger crossed...

Been a few updates since ive been away.

* new weighted gearknob
* replaced grey leather gear and handbrake gaiters with nice fresh black ones.
* installed a wind deflector or breaker or whatever you want to call it to cut down cabin buffeting with roof down.. this has been a complete revelation and better than I would have ever expected
* changed my rear spoiler for a high kick style, still not sure how I feel about this compared o the previous lip but as you will have noticed from earlier posts big changes always take a while to settle in with me.

Next up is a badly needed review of front tracking and a set of front spacers, also want to strip and clean all the arches.
