License Plate Light Assembly Removal?

Hey guys, I'm having some troubles with my 2004 325i and need some help. One of my license plate light bulb contact tabs fell apart due to corrosion. I'm trying to replace the entire license plate light assembly with another one from a junkyard. I've removed the four Torx screws and now have the license plate light assembly hanging by the harness. The problem is I can't figure out how to disconnect the trunk handle micro switch from the license plate light assembly. The Bentley manual simply says "disconnect micro switch" but I don't see any tabs or anything. I tried pulling and prying with a flat head and I'm afraid to break the damn thing. Anybody have any info or advice on this? Thanks.

If you remove the trunk lid liner, you will be able to follow the harness up. The connector is behind a plastic bracket that mounts just under where the tool kit is. If I still had an e46 I would get some pictures for you.

Thanks LD330XI. No pics required I'll track down the harness. I was hoping I didn't have to remove the liner but oh well.

I can confirm this is the procedure, I just did this a couple of months ago. Use a trim tool if you have one

Yup, can confirm the procedure.

First, remove the 4 Torx screws out of the bottom of the license plate assembly,

Then carefully pull the assembly away from the trunk hood, mind the wire going into the hood as to not break it.

Then remove the liner on the inside of the hood, I was able to do it with just removing the four bottom retainers, you can open the roadside toolset to get you more slack from the liner.

Pull down the liner, there will be a black retainer/cover between the trunk hood and the liner. Then you can trace the wires from the assembly to the inside clipped onto a retainer that will hold the plugs. You can carefully pry it off and unplug it from there.

It took me 15 minutes and now I have a non-corroded assembly.

By chance do you know what part the license plate assembly is? it looks like 511 37 17 09 66 on RealOEM. I still have 2 bulb holders but one side is shot due to corrosion and is not likely to be salvageable.

Thanks in advance!
