Rear interior door panel delete

Removed inside trim panels. Window and motor still inside. Was expecting to still be able to open the door from the outside handle but NO.

Does the inside pull release cable need to be connected even for the outside handle to function?

I do not have interior trim panels. I still have the window and motor, as well as the cable. I don't think the cable has to remain for the outer latch to work, I thought the inner and outer latches were separate. But it's been a while since I removed the latch mechanism from the door, I can't remember.
