Medical Advice Needed: Nasty cut on foot

So, a week prior to this past sunday (the 13th), I went fishing with my cousin and gf. After the day was up, we were loading the boat onto the trailer. We couldn't get it lined up perfect so I jumped into the water by the loading dock to help guide the boat on. Like an idiot, i did so without shoes on. I stepped on what was likely a broken bottle and severely injured my foot. We got to the hospital, had it stitched up, and they said that i would need to come back to get the stitches off a week later.

Now, a week and a day later, I got the stitches removed this morning. They said the cut is healing very well and that I should be able to start walking on it this week simply to take it easy.

I want to minimize the recovery time and fortunately, with work, am able to take my shoe off/elevate my foot.

My question is, should I leave on a gauge pad and have it wrapped with medical tape to keep the wound shut or leave it open to the air unwrapped?

As I see it, the gauge/medical tape, will keep the wound stay closer together which I assume would allow it to heal faster.

However, I know that air is good for cuts and helps with healing.

So I don't know which way to go here. With the stitches out, the would has really split open a decent bit again. Can someone make a suggestion as to which of the above would be better and any suggestions on how to minimize recovery time needed would be great

JFC need a damn NWS tag for those pics. Seriously, I'd be grossed out if I had to look at that cut everyday. Anyway, keep it clean (duh) and keep it exposed to air... maybe put a big ass brown paper bag on it so other people don't have to see that thing. Wait, how and the hell do you drive with half your foot spilling out? Damn that's nasty, looks like a squadron of brown recluse spiders attacked your foot or something. Man, yikes, seriously. Bet that sh!t hurt too, sorry bud.

Russ, it hurt like a MOFO... I can't drive or walk (have been on crutches since it happened) and my gf, who i live and work with, has been driving us to and from work (and anything else). She has been an absolute superstar thus far... real wifey material

Although, there is nothing quite as frustrating as being helpless, which essentially is what I am with this thing

Can't walk, can't drive, can't carry things (hands on crutches when walking), and am 0 fun at outings cause i am that handicap kid... it has also stunted my modding project which I was set to complete this past weekend but can't due to driving a stick shift

^Sounds like a good girl... you should probably push this as far as you can. Suggest that she get a rickshaw to haul you around the house.

I think you got the medical advise you were seeking in the first few posts, but I have to add....

I was watching Grey's Anatomy last night, and this dude had a cut in his foot which he didn't take care of. They amputated his foot.

Keep Neosporin on it and make sure you don't tear it open again. And +1 to open air...
