E46 engine swap

Replaced a engine out of my 2004 330i(3.0) with a 330i 2003 (3.0) the 2003 engine ran before removal.
Swapped valve covers from the 03 engine and put on the 04 ones, since this is what I was told to do in this forum since I used my old computers(back left hand side against firewall)
Used the 03 transmission, can you use the 2003 transmission with the 2004 computer system?
Even relearned key with the scanner(we think, says it programmed)

Any information is gratefully appreciated. Car just cranks and doesnít start with all the 2003 computers, but doesnít with the 2004ís

I think you need to read the codes you are getting. Either load up INPA, PA Soft, etc. (search BMW coding tools) onto a laptop or find someone who is familiar reading BMW codes with a BMW specific code reader (generic code reader won't do). Since it takes a while to load and learn how to use INPA, etc. finding someone to help is your best bet.

I would stick with the '04's original DME and preferably its original engine harness. I would double check everything is plugged in. Also check the brown ground wires that are bolted to the body near the DME. And maybe double check all grounds were re-connected. The suggestion about coils/ valve cover was ONLY if they coil styles were different (old style vs new style) between the (new engine) '03 and the (old) '04 engine.

I don't know about the '03 transmission going into the '04 car. If they used a different transmission between '03 and '04 you might have a problem, but I don't think so.

This should have been a plug and play installation - keep the original DME/ wiring . drop in new M54B30 and turn the key.

Planning on hauling it over to a local BMW shop in town tomorrow. They are going to check it all over Monday.
The owner of the bmw shop says itís probably something minor, so they are gonna help me out.
I appreciate all your help, Iíll be sure to report back here when he calls me with the update
