Stereo is fuzzy/unclear from time to time

About a week ago, the audio in my 2002 M3 started sounding unclear/fuzzy, especially at high volume. It's not just the radio, but also the CD player. What's weird is that the problem is intermittent: sometimes, it goes away after a few minutes of driving, while at other times, it doesn't.

I tried replacing the head unit with the one in my 2001 330ci (both are the 2003+ upgraded OEM version w/ AUX and MP3 support), but this didn't fix the problem.

Do you think the amplifier (H/K version) is to blame? My only other idea is that the Parrot handsfree system, which the former owner of the M3 installed, may be interfering with the stereo (it seems to be working properly, though). Before talking a look at the amp, is there anything else I should check? I hate taking things apart because they never end up coming back together perfectly, so I really hope the issue lies elsewhere!

Everything else in the car is working fine FWIW- it's in really good condition and only has about 45k miles on it. The whole audio system is stock H/K.

I know this is an old thread but I just replaced both amps (what a waste) and the problem is still there. I'm thinking it might be one or both of the rear speakers now, or just a loose connection somewhere.
