My Ride: 2004 330i
Year: 2004
Model: 330i
I searched for months trying to figure out a fix for the 2800 rpm stutter my 2004 330i. I emailed Balidawg last week, followed his instructions for downloading software and purchased a K+DCAN cable with the switch. Scott started a teamviewer session, installed the software on my laptop and verified connectivity to my car.

Before he performed any actions he let me know what he was doing and what to expect. There was a mild hiccup and the 1st attempt failed. We were worried the cable could be bad, but after checking for other errors and good voltage at the battery, he started the update again.

2nd try worked perfectly! After some checks and clearing faults, he had me crank the car. It fired right up. Engine idled just a tad rough through the SAP cycle. After that, the idle smoothed out.

After getting the engine and oil hot I tried a couple 3rd gear pulls through the 2500-3300 rpm range. The engine stayed perfectly smooth after the update.

I really can't put into words how much I appreciate Scott taking time out of his day just to help, essentially, strangers on this forum.

thanks balidawg.. another successful install of bmwtools and DME update here.

of course there is a risk of bricking the car when using USB passthrough to a virtual machine .. but in this case the inpa scripts just plowed through the communication errors and the actual update worked with only one retry.

for others reference we did this from windows 10 pro 64 bit version 1903 running in vmware fusion 11 on macos mojave 10.14. bimmergeeks expert k+DCAN cable plus the double k-line adapter to bridge a couple of pins.

How can I tell if I have the latest version of software?
The car is an '02.
It has an ms43 that is flashed with an EWS delete bin.
It was originally a ZF, but I swapped that with a GM and a GS20 - software version 7535061
Hoping to get rid of the 3 second pause going into drive it has developed in the mornings.

Thanks!
Tony

Might want to delete your duplicate post here.

I only update to stock software and do not bother with EWS delete. Check with Armenh7 for that.

All I want to do is update the stock GS20.
I'm able to do this myself, I just don't know what the latest version is.

MS43 versions include:
430037
430055
430056
430064
430066
430069

V37 and V55 are usually what unupdated cars have except cars with six-speed manuals. I believe they run on v56 or v66 due to support for cruise control. Most DME updates will bring you up to V66. Most EWS delete files are based on V56.

Updating your EGS will not affect the DME.

Just run WinKFP to update the GD20. It will tell you the current version and suggest a new version, if available.

Ahh of course, it's simpler that I try and make it.
Got the EGS updated and it's running well.

I'm really starting to enjoy driving my FreeMW!

Thanks for your assistance.

I had a great experience with Scott this weekend. After getting the cable and downloading the software...he was able to quickly and efficiently update my DME software on my 2000 328i. It still had the original software it left the factory with in 2000. Scott is highly knowledgeable and as others have mentioned, he takes the time to explain exactly what he's doing. After the update, the throttle is a bit more responsive, my idle is better and it pulls a little smoother through the rpm range. The cable is not expensive and the update is free from Scott, so I'd recommend this to everyone.

Previously, I took the car to the dealer for an update, but they told me "if it aint broke, don't fix it" i.e. we are not confident we can do this without breaking something.

Thanks again Scott! This forum is lucky to have members like you!

nice update, thanks bali. after you updated DME/EGS the 05 xi there was a noticeable performance improvement. unfortunately the same updates on the 04 xi did not solve my hard shifting issue. i wish everything could be solved with a software update.

Balidawg to the rescue!

Just got off a call with Balidawg, who updated my 325i's engine and transmission software to the latest. He also set up my tools and dongles and loaded everything onto the old laptop I bought. He basically saved me from an infinity loop of trying to understand 589 things I don't understand. Like how a Windows PC works. If you are in need of some serious help, he is the man and is incredibly generous with his time. Oh, yeah: I also now know what's wrong with my ABS (MK60 as I found out) and can finally get rid of the "Trifecta." He's a huge reason this is the greatest forum in the world (objectively proven by a certification society in Switzerland).

Yes, you can look at the Assembly Number on the DME page in INPA. After you choose Engine, MS43, hit F3 to view it.

+1 for Scott, just got done driving the car around after updating DME. Definitely feeling a lot better throttle response, it's much harder to stall the car getting from a stop, it feels almost as if the engine has an auto throttle if you just let out the clutch. Much smoother power delivery throughout the rev range. Went from original software to latest, so big jump. Scott has lots of knowledge about diagnosing and coding these cars, he explained every step of the process, and how he checks all the CAN computers to double check everything, makes the process a lot less nerve racking.
