Getting a job involving something to do with BMWs...

I know ya'll OT'ers hate when BMWs are talked about out here but since this isn't about cars specifically, I wanted to put this here. If you don't like it, you can PM me something mean.

Right now I work for an e-commerce company that I hate ok I don't hate the company but the people right above me are out of touch with reality and the year 2016. We just got bought out so there's hope here in the future but I'm also planning to move to California very soon (once I can get a job ).

I do graphic design and front-end web development, as well as photography, data entry, project management, blah blah. I have a wide skill set and this job takes advantage sometimes, which I don't really mind, it beats being bored.

Anyway, the more I buy parts for my car, stuff to detail my car, etc. the more I see the potential to marry my two passions together. I know the only e-commerce company in California is Pelican Parts, which I'd love to work for.. or anyone like ECS Tuning, FCP Euro, and so on.. but they're on the east coast.

My problem is that these places NEVER seem to be hiring for anything other than sales reps/customer service. Now I know some employees of these companies frequent these boards and I am candidly asking you how you go about getting a professional position at any of those places or places like it that I have not mentioned. Or if anyone knows anyone, has worked in the past, yada yada. Any advice would be helpful. I know I could e-mail with my info/resume/portfolio but that feels like cold calling.

I am certainly happy to tell you how I got involved with FCP Euro. My name is Gareth Foley and I am the BMW Catalog Manager at FCP Euro. In short, I was hired because of some YouTube video I put on my YouTube channel. Very long story short, I graduated college fall semester of 2010. I took my first job out of College working for a Nissan car dealer as a sales consultant. While working there I broke the right engine support bracket on my E39 528i. At the time I was living with a few of my friends and had a decent following on YouTube with car videos. I decided to make a video of the repair process. I uploaded the video onto YouTube, liked FCP Euro in the description, and I was contacted a short time after by Scott Drozd who is the CEO of FCP. At the time they were looking to do DIY videos with established YouTube channels in exchange for parts. I jumped on the opportunity as something fun to do. In March of 2012 I left the Nissan dealer for a career in Executive Recruiting. Lets leave it off with this, I did not last long at all. At that point I weighed my options and figured FCP might be a good fit. I started with FCP in August 2012 as a sales/service representative. By February of 2013 I was moved into the product side of FCP and started developing the BMW catalog while working on other makes when possible. Fast forward to September of 2014 I became the BMW Catalog Manager and that's what I have been doing since. My job is building a business within a business in short, but it's also so much more. I've made steps up each year since I started working at FCP and my initial entry was not traditional. Sometimes, not being traditional with how opportunities arise is not a bad thing at all.

I can say for sure that FCP Euro is not hiring sales reps as we are transitioning to 100% online sales. We have a relatively small service department for a company of our size and that's going to remain that way ideally. The main focus is on optimizing areas to reduce work load and automate things as much as possible. Selling car parts is nothing new, but using technology and good ideas can certainly make things more efficient and easier on the community as well as our company internally. So while the focus of FCP Euro is to sell car parts and be a leading online retailer for European car parts we are also doing things internally here that are cutting edge.

Try marketing yourself on peopleperhour.com - charge double to treble what you get paid by the hour normally as its a contract and be professional obviously.

If you just want to do e-commerce with a product you enjoy...then make your own e-commerce site with payment gateway blah blah and sell your own sourced (bmw) parts - obviously you need "space" and i dont know your situation. Im just thinking how you can get paid more for your time in your own time with little investment.
