I don't disagree, and for everyday use, the Lexus is probably the more sensible choice. In my mind, it will always be the compromise car though, not the absolute "best" even if the use doesn't fit its ability.

I don't think you'll find many M5 owners comparing their car to the GS-F, whereas the opposite will always be the case to justify their decision.

Great car and probably once mine blows up with a big bill, I'll get back to my low maintenance car choices, haha.

I have this mentality now. Might start leasing cuz im so tired of having to deal with fixing things. I don't even want to do a simple oil change anymore.

Nah all you not wanting to do **** or change oil, live with an S62 and you will just smile laying under that thing while it eats 10w-60. The more people I see who know my other car was totaled (mostly fuddy Duddy wife's friends) have no clue what it is, they just think it is a 5 series. It is so awesome and you get in and simply start it and it's in kinda like only you and other enthusiasts know which is like 1% of the population, makes me giddy. Like a 16 year old E46Fanatics newb. Ha

As it ended up, it was too much work and money to find wheels with E39 fitment. I grabbed a set of powder coated Style 189s from CL and a used set of Blizzaks. See the recent purchases thread...I'll be happy with it, but cost me a little more than I wanted in the end.

Can't wait to see that winter setup. Let me know what size tires you get, as well as what size spacers. What size are those wheels, 17x8?

I'll post up once I get them mounted in about 2 months or so.

The style 189s are 18x8 front, 18x8.5 rear.
Tires are 245/40 18 all around.

I need to do a little more calculating, but I think I'm going to run a 20mm spacer to compensate for the offset.

My style 65s are a square setup with all rears and a 5mm (I think) spacer.

Goodbye E46 :( Hello S2K!!?

395,000 mile 2000 528i on the left with replacement 540i trunk (posin') lots of rust but from this distance you wouldn't know, old Mille miglia wheels so black with dirt they look like OE chrome shadow, original auto trans, reverse slowly giving way, lifetime fluid in the tranny and diff,

79,800 mile 2003 m5 on the right, no rust except a small bubble inside the gas filler door, just found out I have f***ng green coolant in the expansion tank, now I have a job for the weekend.

FFF UUU PHOTOBUCKET!!!!!

Literally every single valuable DIY on M5Board had pics in Photobucket and they are all ruined and only contain helpful text now, but no pictures (which is one of the most helpful things for DIY's as we all know). Example.

Was just researching how to do a coolant flush and started reading the horror stories about O-rings and a Thermostat replacement. All DIY's have zero pics because of photobucket a*holes.. F ME.

MODS = Change the title of my thread to replace S2K with E39 M5 please!

Here you go, for all you e39 fanatics, my attempt at solving the infamous gas cap filler area water pooling bmw flaw. For others, this area has a slant down towards the car and thus pools with like 1/4 inch of water anytime it rains/gets wet, etc. literally the only spot of rust on my car is in there.

I built the area up with some gray Flex seal while I had the car jacked up high on this side, so the angle was perfect. Also had to baby sit the blob for a few hours to make sure the area by the door flap had enough clearance to open and close as it's a tight fit in there. After 1.5 days now it's just about fully dry except for right in the middle of the deepest part, but it cured enough after several hours for me to put the car down off the jack.

Water should just slide out of there now, in theory. Looks good when flap closed.

This is horrible.

For anyone who's E46 gets totalled. Please attempt the buy the car back, for peanuts, as you could pull one single part and make all your money back! I wanted to keep track to see where she went.

here she is in all her glory

Click on the "auction history" to see what she sold for.

E46Fanatics sticker still representin'! Did I really get a bid from the republic of Ghana?!!!?

Isn't that just f'n sad and pathetic? I could pull the brand new power steering pump and high pressure lines and make that money back.

I could yank one single door and sell the parts from that one door and make that money back.

it's kinda sickening. Even worse that the auction only lasted 47 seconds!!!!!

It's sold for way more. This is not the auction site. Car sold on copart. And copart never release final sale price. So $225 was the highest bud before it actually went to online auction. It's probably sold for $800-1000.

^^ that would make me feel a little better, but not much!

Sam - no rides for anyone in my car until I handle the 8 Grand "Recommended Action Plan" bill that BMW of Norwood gave me when I brought it in for the airbag recall last week

It was a false alarm on the clutch though which was listed as "worse case scenario including new flywheel" as a $4700 job!!

Other 2 major issues are bad Center Support Bearing, causing the driveshaft to slap against the transmission tunnel when starting the car cold and driving in 1, 2 and 3, goes away once car is warm.

And the Leaking Pinion seal at the rear diff.

I've ordered a new rebuilt driveshaft with center bearing already installed, and have a box full of lifetime parts from FCP for the pinion seal. Must remove the 150LB exhaust in order to do these jobs. Fun Fun!!!

I just want the car to drive normally again at this point as I miss it already from driving like a grandma.

My '04 zhp with 82K got totaled (front hit) and the sucker sold for $4K at auction. I have no idea why someone would pay that high a price for a car that even after you repair it will have a rebuilt title. While in good condition otherwise, getting more than $4K in parts would likely be challenging.

Sounds like you did zero maintenance on that car of yours. Mine, while super high mileage at 236K miles, had so many new parts in that car it was ridiculous. You just couldn't see them from the outside! I could have easily made 4K off of parts, but it would have taken me awhile. It's a goldmine money maker for whomever bought that car, and I told my friend he should have been all over that, but he's not a dealer and cannot be part of these auctions.

Also, in Mass now, if a car is past a certain age, it does not get a salvage title anymore if it's totaled. Interesting.
