Questions about 5hp19 to 6hp19 conversion

Hi guys,

I've turned the internet upside down, to try and source information regarding is this actually possible or not, but with no luck.

The key points that let me believe its possible is that a late e46 330ci in europe usually run MS45.0 and they use the 5hp19( 5 speed auto), and early e60 530i which has the same m54b30 engine, also runs by MS45.0 but they are coupled with a 6hp19 which is the next gen 6 speed torque converter auto transmission.

I know for a fact that my e46 330ci uses a Siemens GS20 unit to control the transmission, and its a separate control unit that the one for the engine.
Is it the same for the 530i e60, and would swapping the EGS module from the e60, with the wiring, run the 6hp19 on the e46?
Does anyone have info or knowledge to say an relevant opinion about this?

Thank you in advance!

I've been trying to find information on this for a while now.
There's no much out there.

The only I know is pretty much what you've noted.
M54 cars with 6hp19 ran on MS45.0 with GS19 TCU/EGS

I guess if you converted your car to MS45.0 then it would be viable to install the 6hp19.
6hp19 with gs19 and ms43? Not sure.

Yes, i've been told that in the past as well. 6hp and MS43 doesn't work,
But some e46 are OEM with MS45, correct? the e46 coupe facelift runs throughout the same years as the m54 e60 (2003-2005) . Next week I'll be around my car and I wil confirm if it runs on 43 or 45.

6HP has the TCU inside the gearbox itself ;-) As far as i know, no one has ever build a 6hp int the E46 chassis.

MS45.1 was, and E60 MS45.1 cars (US only) also got the 6AT.

You are correct in that European E46s were MS43 for the entire production run. Though it would not be difficult to convert one to run on an MS45.0

HOWEVER, the MS45 supports two distinct CAN-bus modes, and they are structured very differently. It is unclear to me as to whether or not the MS45 can communicate with a 6-speed transmission when in the legacy-can-bus mode.

Now the MSV70 and MSD80 were used in the facelift Z4 and X3, which have N52 engines, 6AT transmissions, and E46-style CAN-communications. The code on the MSV70 and MS45 are also quite similar. So worst case it might be a matter of transplanting some of the CAN-bus code from the MSV70 to the MS45... but that's well beyond the skill level of most people here.

I think for the amount of unknown and effort required, I'm be tempted to go with an N52 swap with the 6AT into an E46. A Z4 3.0i/si would make a good donor (same front subframe as the E46).
