i think he will smoke you.... sorry... BMW's are not fast if they don't have that M on it... you might be able to get him on a course... but definately not straight away... hey, at least your BMW is WAY better looking.

really i thought the opposite, I have rode in his car and it doesnt seem to pull nearly as hard as mine, could it be because it is not in great shape, My friend actually raced him in a 97 jeep cherokee limited(v8) and beat him from 0-75mph and then the mustang pulled away at 95...what do you think?

0-60 for a 93 stang vert auto is 8 seconds

you will win

I soundly beat (ok destroyed) a late 90's 4.6 Mustang GT from 0-80 (beginning of freeway 54 west here in San Diego) in my stock 328i 5speed.

The 5.0's fox-bodys are NOT fast at all when stock. Though, after about 5k in mods they are venerable beasts (blower, head work, etc..etc..) in a straight line.

If your car is a 5speed, you should have no problem being that you launch well.

Freeway, it should be no contest. From a 60mph roll, drop it in 3rd.

Now, the new '02 Cobras... those are M5 level badboys.

My 5.0

In addition to my 330 I have an '89 5.0 5spd. which I bought new. These cars ran 0-60 in 5.9-6.0 seconds and the 1/4 in 14.6 @ 96 MPH-Box stock. Sound familiar? Very similar times for the manual 330.

The Mustang was limited by poor traction--you could smoke the tires at will for as long as you wanted. With some simple mods and a few dollars ( 1000 or less ) these cars would run low 14's to high 13's. Mine still has most of the mods I had done and still runs like stink. Alot of bang for the buck ( I paid $13,300 )

Your friends car however should be a little slower due to auto and convertible. Just don't let him jump you in the sweetspot of his first gear. As speed builds you should gain an advantage. His car has probably also lost a step unless it has been really well maintained. New, stock, it probably wasn't much faster than 6.4-6.5 on a good day. With a good launch you should hold him off the line.

Good luck. Be careful.

BTW, if you really want to mess with him--have him try to follow you through some twisties.

Those old automatics are sloooow

I should know, I used to have one...the manuals were quite a bit quicker. I'm pretty sure you can take an automatic.

Are you sure about these #'s...

What was the HP rating of the 5.0's? 215HP correct?
Maybe with the solid rear and a great launch it COULD do a 14.6, but the 96 MPH trap is high.

Smile 5.0 HP/perf

Close. The rating in 1989 was 225HP and 300 lb/ft of torque. Peak HP was at a slow 4400 RPM.

Like you said, the auto's were slower especially the ones with the 2.73 rear end. The 5 spds especially w/ the 3.08 gears did really well.

I have many different magazines I have saved from those years and they support those numbers. In addition to that, I have been at the track and seen as well as achieved these results. That was stock and it only got faster!

If you look at todays 4.6L V8s (non cobra) many of them are running even better -- HP is up to 260 0n GT.

Cobra is another story. BTW, a friend had same Supra--FAST!

mustangs are cool, esp the oldschool 65-71 years. These are the cars that turned my blood to oil. the mustang vs. camaro fued was battled out every other weekend at the local 1/4 mile. Tranny's break, engines blow. Icey jets of fire, leaving a nitrous glow.
here's my buddy's ride, imagine this same car and setup in a black version, and you have my other friends car. heh

I owned three 5.0 liter Mustangs, one was a '89 GT AOD.

If his GT is in good running condition, then he'll beat your 328. I'm guessing you'll get the jump off the line on him, then he'll take you around midrange.

Honestly though, the 87-92 5.0 Fox Stangs were rated at 225hp, but they were overrated, they pretty much have around 215hp at the fly. But the 300 ft./lbs of torque is what will take the 328 in the 1/4mile. On the highway though after say 95mph, you'd definately take him.

I once had my '89 GT up to 130mph (yes it was stupid), and those stock drums are scary, they faded in a split second. Horrid braking.

my first car was 5.0 and spinning the tires and donuts were the best...other than ...it sounded nice.... i had the notchback lx 5.0 , 5spd and my friend a gt automatic vert... not even close..i would kill him..kill him.... our other friend used to beat him(sometimes) in ( get this)a z24 vert 5 spd...honest to god..but the lx was fast...and light...like everyone said 1000 in mods and hold on... couldn't even drive it in the rain...

Notchback LX, i loved those, always wanted one. I still want to own one actually... I had a LX hatch 5.0.

5.0s are still some of the sweetest sounding cars with aftermarket exhaust out there.
