Debating a couple of oils

Hi all,

So I've tried doing my research, and I want to decide between two oils. Liqui Moly Leichtlauf 5w40 and Shell Rotella T6 5w40. I don't want to hear about Mobil 1 or Redline or Valvoline. I just want to pick between these two, I've been running LM 5W40 but the car is a bit too ticky for me, so I've been debating switching to Shell. The car sees an occasional track day and my weather can range from -9F to 110F.

Thanks for the help.

The simple answer is that both are fine oils. We get all to up tight about oil types.

Now, if you ask what I prefer, it is T6. I have my reasons based on experience. But bottom line is pick one you like and stick with it.

Waaaay too much hand-wringing on these forums about oil. Pick a quality one (both you have listed are excellent oils) and run an OCI from 5-7K and don't worry about it.

Either way you won't go wrong. Both are very good oils. T6 is probably easier to get locally for a good price because it's a very popular choice for trucks. Local parts stores usually are expensive for the euro specialty oils if they even have it so you would probably want to order online.

I use the T6 on my car since it was a very good deal at my local Autozone ($26 for 2 gallons after rebate) and stocked up on it.

I was previously running Mobil 1, but I think the Rotella does a better job at keeping the engine quiet. I've also added the Liqui Moly MoS2 additive. The Liqui Moly is also a very good oil, it eliminated the oil consumption my dad's M3 had.

I switched over to Liqui Moly 5w40 and I like it. I am using FCP Euro Oil kit so I can take advantage of lifetime warranty.

Castrol Edge 0/40 is mine now. I insist on LL-01 oil...and my 358,000 proves it's not a bad choice. Oh...and I'm doing 12-15,000 miles between oil changes.

Awesome! How much oil consumption are you seeing? I'm at 250k with almost no consumption between my 5,000 miles between changes.

Now I'm probably about 3 qts. every 15,000 miles...some of that is the rear main seal--I'm waiting for my clutch to go to replace it...so not too shabby.

Cool, I'm also on the original clutch. Was wondering how far it would go, looks like at least 350k if I'm nice to it

I'm thinking about trying Rotella again. Used it in my e36 with good results, but the m52b28 has the good rings. My xi currently has Castrol 0w-40 in it and at 4000 miles I've had to add 1/4 at. I changed oil right before I did my m56 valve cover conversion so that could be a factor. Never used any before that other than the OFHG leak.

LM. Only because the built in pour spout is way to cool.

T6 is a great oil for cleaning the inside of the engine, but I see a slight increase in oil usage. But the power recovered from using it was worth it. I used it at 230k miles and now Im at 240k.

I used t6 before and it seemed nice and thick and helped with lifter tick. I prefer Mobil 1 tho
