Thumbs Up Who Says the S54 Block Isn't BULLET PROOF?

Well, they aren't completely bullet proof (depending on the bullet) but we're getting closer. As we continue to push these S54 engines to their limits (over 1,000rwhp), we uncover weaknesses that you normally wouldn't see. And in cases of catastrophic motor failure, we have seen blocks crack down the cylinder wall due to the thin cylinder walls around the water jacket areas.

This is the first part in our quest to make a reliable and daily driveable 1,000rwhp for our stage 4 kits. With everyone racing to get a stage 3 in their car, we are planning ahead.

All stage 4 kits will now have a .020 "UNDER" bore and we are increasing the power output to 1,000rwhp. This gives our customers that already have stage 3 or our 900rwhp stage 4 kits an upgrade path to 1,000rwhp if they so desire. It also provides an option for anyone that wants to do serious racing in long duration races or races such as the Texas Mile, an opportunity to run a more stout block in their stage 2.5, 3 or 4 builds.

There were only 2 ways safely accomplish this. One is to sleeve good quality blocks that come in from customers. The other option is to order S54 blocks before they were bored to factory specs. We have accomplished both of these.

The first block to arrive was the sleeved block from Darton. Darton sleeves are 4 times stronger than the iron that comes in the block itself. In addition, we are going from a .020 overbore to a .020 underbore for the stage 4 kits. This adds an additional .040" thickness to the cylinder walls and greatly increases the surface area between cylinders for the head to seal.

We will be building one of our first "factory spec" underbore blocks directly from BMW for RACEMX-M3 as he is planning on running the Texas Mile.

The pricing on our site has been updated to reflect this, but the dyno graphs haven't... Here's a link to it. http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/part...s/E46_M3/11037

Here are some pictures of our first sleeved block from Darton. The cylinder wall thicknesses are over exaggerated in the picture as we still have to machine the cylinder walls to our specifications.

You're right! How fun would it be to be the first BMW to hit 200 in the standing mile?

Where do you come up with this stuff? The cranks in these cars are made out of forged steel. There would be equal load on the crank if tuned right. Your rod and main bearings would fail before your crank would snap in half. There are 3 stage 4 cars out there and their cranks have help up just fine. I would love to see pics of a broken s54 crank, if you can prove me wrong please by all means post up pics of a broken S54 crank. Robert has been running his stage 3 for 2 years now with his crank shaft intact.

Yep that's right. But when a HPF car starts getting over a real 1000rwhp wait and see.

1000rwhp in the US is only 800rwhp in the real world that exists outside of the USA

More flapping of your mouth and no proof of these mystery cranks. The real world??? That's funny so let me guess your home made turbo kit makes 1000 US horse power. How many motors have you gone through? Interesting none of these other real world M3's have never been seen, no 1/4 mile runs, you tube videos.. Very odd
