Only 1 person I ever met had a solid reason for buying a Volvo. It had to do with the total vehicle weight. He owned a construction company as I recall and his wife did not want to drive a traditional "Truck" or large SUV. Apparently the Volvo XC or what ever the All Wheel Drive SUV was was one HEAVY sucker. Apparently he could depreciate it as a business expense or something along these lines.

Car was 10 years old, look good, had about 90k miles on it. The headlight control module (LCM in BMW terms) was bad. Headlights did stupid stuff. Was an expensive proposition to get fixed. All used ones do the same thing, probably had to be coded to the car. He said he was dumping the car because it needed the headlights to work to pass inspection along with front brakes. He said he had enough. Did not want to put another $1500 in the car because he had no idea what would creep up next.

The car looked well cared for and good shape, but he said screw it, did not owe him much at that point.

I have many other Volvo stories that make owning a BMW look like a much smarter move. Even the Mercedes stories I hear are scary, my buddy is a Shop Foreman at the local Mercedes dealer and he mainly deals with cars under warranty and just out of warranty.

Why buy a car you cannot maintain (DIY or shop)?
If money is tight, consider getting a Honda or Toyota, not a BMW.

I don't think th problem here is whether he can afford or maintain it...he just doesn't have the space to do the work himself...
