needing help about the battery overcharging issue

Since my laptop battery got overheat frequently and go heaven a couple days ago, then i have determined to buy a new laptop battery replacement online on https://www.all-laptopbattery.com/dell-latitude-e7440.html .
I don't know which practise cause such issues. Will overcharging be the main reason? I have a doubt that whether it is safe if we leave a laptop for charging even if it is fully charged. Some friends of mine told me that excess power will damagethe motherboard. But i read the product info from the website and it said that the controller chips they have built-in will stop the battery from overcharging. So the overcharging-protection means that i don't need to do like that at all. What should i go on, i don't want my new battery fail due to the same reaon any more.
