Alternator voltage regulator cominucation

Hello all! I've been looking around the web but could not find an answer to this question I have. I (temporary) replaced my voltage regulator in my 316ti with another model that has a different kind of connector for the cominucation between the alternator and the car computer. (from a 325 I think)

It works absolutely perfect! (always reads 14,3-5 volts when running) but it does give a 'generator cominucation failure' code when scanning the car. Is it OK to drive around with the cominucation lead disconnected? I'm planning on replacing it with an oem part that fits my 316ti when I get it in the mail. Thanks !
