A comfortable drivers seat.

I have a 01 E46 Grey interior (power/heated not the sports seats). I just took another 5hr trip and I realize how uncomfortable these seats are on a long trip. I'm looking to swap out the seats from newer models 3 series or other E46 seats, any suggestions.

I am not suprised if someone tells me that basic e46 seats are killing your back.
I will never ever buy 3-series BMW without sport seats. No matter old or new.

I like the standard, also called "comfort", seats better for long trips. The sport seats are fine for shorter drives but don't offer the same support.

I disagree, but everyone has own opinion
My opinion for sport seat, that offers excellent support for legs, because you can lift front part of the seat up.
With basic seats you cannot adjust front part up/down, my legs are in the air.

I really like coupe sport seat..

After 9 years, the e46 sports seats are just not comfortable especially on a long drive. Found myself wanting to stretch or straighten back. So I just retrofitted lumbar support for £60 per seat a few months ago and it's made a massive difference. Easy diy. Consider this first. Really helps support your lower back. I'm 35 years old for reference.

Driving/sitting anywhere “on a long drive” will feel uncomfortable after extended time.

over the decades I have found it to be more an individual issue with:
body type, seat adjustment, steering wheel adjustment. you’d be surprised how poorly adjusted people make their body in seats to drive. and the number who aren’t even aware of the tilt/telescoping of the steering wheel column.

^This.

BTW the adjustable thigh bolsters on the Sport seats are useless for talk folk (like myself).

The most comfortable seats I've ever experienced for long drives were hands-down the comfort seats in my old E34 525i:

Finding a set of Sport seats in grey shouldn't be too difficult but I'd find a reputable Upholsterer and see if they can be rebuilt.

Adjustable thigh support is hugely beneficial to me on short jaunts and long trips. I don't understand why BMW would not add this feature to comfort seats.

The most comfortable BMW seats that I have experienced via direct ownership (E30, E39, E46) are the Recaro-licensed E30 sport seats.

The F30 sport seats aren't bad but I would look for used E46 sport seats so it's a lot easier to swap over. Big improvement over the standard seats.
