Need a DME or EGS flash update?

What I Do
I'll update the software in your DME (engine control module) or EGS (automatic transmission control module) to the latest BMW factory version for free using WinKFP. I've done over 300 of these for various friends and forum members over the years. You can drive out to my house in Riverside, CA or I can do it remotely over the internet. PM me to get started.

Why Update?
I recommend every car be updated to the latest. There are three main benefits.
  1. Bug fixes: there are many bugs in various DME families that have been revealed over the years, including the 2800 RPM stutter in MS45.1, inability to get O2 emissions monitors to pass in MS42, transmission shifting maps in GS20, etc.; if you look at the software version history, some have over 20 revisions!
  2. More responsive: the throttle, timing, fuel control, and shifting maps have all been improved over time to make it feel more responsive, everyone notices their car feels quicker and less sluggish after an update
  3. Smoother: the overall driving experience feels more refined and smoother, transitions over the acceleration bands and shift points is less jerky

Which BMWs?
BMW models: E39, E46, E53, E83
DME: MS42, MS43, MS45.1, MSS54
EGS: GS20, GS8.60.4, SMG2

What Do I Need for a Remote Update?
  1. Windows laptop, can be 32-bit or 64-bit XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 10
  2. K+DCAN cable with the switch https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DzN...w?usp=drivesdk (or already soldered pins 7 and 8). BimmerGeeks sells a good cable with a warranty https://www.bimmergeeks.net/product-...eeks-pro-cable
  3. Downloaded the software files from my Google Drive (PM me for download links)
  4. Strong Internet and phone connections at the car

Windows 10 Note
There is a minor issue on Windows 10 with downloading and running the installer EXE file. Defender recently started reporting it as having a trojan. It's only the installer file, all the installed files are fine. I'm guessing because it's such old software that there's some vulnerability related to the installer wrapper BMW used. You can download the same file from another source and see it's also flagged, so you don't think only mine is flagged.

You'll need to disable Defender and possibly other anti-malware before you can download and install the software.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-601385b961db
After the installer finishes it prompts for a Windows reboot. Rebooting automatically turns Defender back on.

How to Install the Software
I'm happy to install and configure the software for you. If you want to try, this video shows how to set up the software after you've downloaded the files from my Google Drive.

Why Is It Free?

How to Update?

Version History
The following links list version histories for each module. The history is a daisy-chain from top going down. You find your current version in the left column, then take the version to its right and search again. Keep doing this until you don't find a newer version and that is the latest available.

This describes how to find your current DME or EGS version number using either BMW Scanner 1.4 or INPA. Itís called the Assembly number by BMW.

BMW Scanner 1.4
  1. Run PA Soft BMW Scanner 1.4
  2. Let it come up with the initial screen that displays the car details
  3. Close it down
  4. Open its log file in Notepad
  5. Scroll down to the USER INFO FIELDS section
  6. Find the Assembly, a seven-digit number usually starting with 7
This is an excerpt from my PA Soft log file. The DME and EGS versions are in bold.

# USER INFO FIELDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unit Date VIN Odometer Assembly Software Service Dealer Tester Program ver.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INPA
  1. Run inpaload.exe
  2. Choose your BMW model from the main screen
  3. Choose Engine for DME or Transmission for EGS and select your appropriate module family
  4. At the moduleís main page, choose F3 for Code or UIF
  5. Find the Assembly number, a seven-digit number usually starting with 7

Yep. I see now that your DME is already at the latest version. I missed that second UIF entry earlier today.

Road trip?

There are a few youtube videos out there. Here is one of a Russian guy doing a bench update so you can see WinKFP in action.

And another very simple update.

I haven't tried, but watching that youtube video he has a power supply, the DME, EWS, and maybe some other stuff all wired up. TerraPhantm has stated on this forum that he can bench update so maybe PM him?

Went up there yesterday for the EGS update. First thing, if you are lowered, be very very careful getting to the location. Dragged my reinforcement plate over a few of the bumps. Other than that, OP is a great guy and the job only took about 15 minutes. The difference in my trans is night and day. Better shifts from high rpm, quicker throttle response, and a ton of overall refinement. I drive quite hard so I notice all the tiny things a regular driver might not see, but the EGS update is extremely worth the time. Thanks again!

Thanks for the kind words. Always glad to help out a fellow forum member. CarbonZHP has one nice E46! Yeah, those speedbumps on my street are a royal bitch, the main reason I really can't lower my cars.

I can also set up your Windows laptop with BMW Standard Tools 2.12 (INPA, WinKFP, NCS Expert, etc.), and the latest daten files, and if you have a K-CAN cable we can test it on your car to verify it works properly. I will create another thread for that soon.

Yeah that would be great. There aren't any good up to date threads on setting that up.

Hey Zman, I work in Irvine and commute every day on the train. If you're not too far away, maybe a house call? You can PM me your contact info and we can figure something out. All I need is my laptop and cable, so it's pretty portable.
