Difference between Xenon/Halogen Headlight lenses? Anyone know?

Hi guys,

I am just wondering what the actual difference is between the Xenon/Halogen headlight lenses on the pre-facelift 99-01 E46 coupes.

They look exactly the same and just about 2 years ago i had to replace the lenses of my Xenon lights and purchased a set of aftermarket lenses which were not for a “Xenon” headlight. They fit fine and have not encountered any issues with them until recently the passenger’s side headlight got some condensation after i sprayed water with my garden hose over the RH side edge of the hood and had forgotten the turn signal lens had been removed. I did notice the fastening tabs are very easy to slip off the headlight housing so it may be time to do an inspection of the headlight to see what may be the issue.

The replaceable plastic cover/lens for the front of the headlight housing is the same between halogens and xenon, AFAIK.

Sounds like the seal between the housing and the lens needs replacement if you're getting condensation.

The ETK lists different part number for Xenon/Halogen lenses but like you said, they are the same.

I just checked the locking tabs on the other headlight and they do not slide off easily as does the passenger’s side unit. Those seals are the genuine ones, and for a 20 year old car i think the seals have done a fabulous job. Might be time to replace at least the one on the headlight that got condensation.

Theoretically the xenon ones are thicker to withstand more heat but my halogen lenses survived fine with quad 55W projectors
