5-pin to 3-pin MAF Conversion

Is it possible to use a 5-pin MAF on an MS43 conversion? I am in the process of converting my MS45.1 to MS43 and was hoping that I can reuse the 5-pin MAF since its still new.

If you're converting to MS43 purely for tuning reasons, know that there are MS45.1 tunes out there.
You'll also need to retrofit a discrete intake air temp sensor since the MS43 engine harness expects that.
There's a lot more involved with MS43 conversion than expected.

I hope this helps a little, I know a lot about E46 but nothing about MS43 conversions. .. Perhaps you can translate this into MS43.

The 3 pin MAFS are older , and do only one thing .. they measure air volume.
To do that with a gas like air (where the density is sensitive to temperature) The system needs to know the air temperature. I noticed the older 325s have a sensor on top of the intake manifold near #3 & #4 There is a wire that goes to it. I've read that sensor was used to get the temperature for the MAF calculations. Starting about 2004 The MAF grew 2 new pins and an air temp sensor (looks like a mini jelly bean in the Siemens MAF). The 2 new pins are (trust me on this) are connected only to that jelly bean temp sensor.
In the 5 pin models like mine, a plastic plug now fills the manifold hole where the old sensor was, and the air temp is measured in the MAF...not the manifold.

I am guessing .. but only guessing, you can ignore those 2 pins and wire the remaining 3 (the hotfilm circuit) up per your desire. You'll still need that

All that having been said .. I need a 5 pin MAF .. if yours is a siemens and you want to sell it to me , I'll buy it .. assuming it fits the smaller airduct (3" ?) Anyway .. I hope my thoughts help.

As Bali said, I'd keep the MS45 system for tuning actually. It's already got widebands in it, and while it's not as "open" as the MS43, it is tuneable and just needs more people working on it.
